Canonically it has been noted that those with natural elements suffer less dramatic effects from techniques of that specific element. When Sasuke fought the Raikage he was caught in a whirlpool of water infused with lightning, but the lightning attack did no damage to Sasuke. Why? Because he has excellent chakra control and one of his natural elements is Lightning. The right hand man of the Raikage, the douchebag with swords who was darkskinned and had funny hair, forgot his name, but he was able to instantly know Sasuke was a natural lightning user because his lightning attack did no damage to him. This is due to chakra control.
Think Chidori, which utilizes piercing-lightning chakra and conjures it all throughout someone's hand and arm. When this technique is used the chakra doesn't harm the user despite how he's obviously coursing dangerously powerful lightning chakra throughout his body. This is because of chakra control and technique mastery. When Rock Lee was first shown to be a Taijutsu Specialist it was noted that when he first attempted to become a Ninja he severely scarred and burned his hands due to not having enough Chakra Control. Thus, his own chakra was able to harm him.
When Naruto uses Rasengan the exploding force of the technique doesn't push back against his body. However, when Naruto uses Rasenshuriken, the amount of chakra control necessary for the technique is so devastating that it partially harms Naruto's palms and his chakra pathways.
Kakashi is a ninja known to have an excellent amount of chakra control. Meaning that his natural elements could be manipulated and utilized the way he sees fit along with any other element he has learned throughout his career. When using fire techniques you knead the chakra within your body and spit it out, but it combusts inches away from the face to avoid damage. Try hitting a bowl with the lighter-flame under your face. It's going to start burning you no matter what you do. Water doesn't burn and thus canonically it's not necessary to release and manipulate the chakra ways away from the face. Though, if someone wanted to do such a thing, it could be noted that it wouldn't be impossible because in Naruto your ability to manipulate chakra can lead to an infinite possibility of actions.
