Kali was exhausted, drenched in sweat, out of breath, and in desperate need of rest as well as water, no one could contest that. Previous elemental training sections hadn’t been this hard, at least not to her knowledge or memory, so why it was taking her forever to manifest Futton was beyond her. It was probably just two years ago when she had learned her first element, that being Suiton, and a couple months ago since she had learned Katon, two elements that could make the very dangerous Futton. So under the guidance of her teacher, an individual who hailed from the Terumi clan who possessed Futton and Futton alone, she was attempting to learn how to manifest the element. But for some strange reason she had been able to do so, it coming close to a week since she had begun training.

She was slowly growing frustrated by the entire thing, annoyance evident on her face and tiredness in her eyes. She was about ready to call it quits and work on something else, for if fate didn’t want her next element to be Futton, than who was she to force the concept’s hand? Yet her teach, Mikasa Terumi, wouldn’t allow for her student to give up, especially when said student was apart of the original bloodline. She had known her mother, a powerful shinobi who wielded both Futton and Yoton with deadly precision, and she knew that her daughter had inherited those two bloodlines. She refused to allow this opportunity to slip through her fingers, and she refused to allow Kali to deny Kirigakure a true Terumi. So she forced the fifteen-year-old Chunin to continue to train, motivating the individual along the way though she found herself getting annoyed as the days went by without any sign of Futton surfacing.

Perhaps she was doing something wrong. Perhaps her body wasn’t ready to learn another element, having only learned her second one days before. Was she moving too soon? Maybe, Kali’s body not yet having become accustomed to her second element was a possibility. Now that she thought about it, they had waited a year after Kali had learned Katon to try learning another basic element, so she most definitely was starting too soon. Or, perhaps Futton wasn’t the element that wanted to surface now. She didn’t have the elements necessary for Yoton just yet, but that didn’t mean that the last component of the element didn’t want to poke its head out. Yes, perhaps she should start Kali on a training regimen to learn Doton instead of Futton, and if that didn’t work, well that told her that her student’s body needed more rest before it was ready to take on another element.

Her eyes gazed at Kali, the fifteen-year-old laying flat upon the ground, greedily gulping down air as her body temperature began to decrease. Yes, she would start on Doton, for it wouldn’t hurt for Kali to have another basic element under her belt, and if Doton was the correct element, well than Kali could learn Futton and Yoton at a later date, and perhaps even at the same time though Misaka would have to find a Terumi who possessed Yoton with the time to train Kali. With a sigh, Misaka stood up, walking out from underneath the shade the tree had provided her and over to Kali, the child’s breath having become even. She knelt down, placing a hand upon the younger female’s head before smiling down at her.

“That’s enough for the day, Kali-san,” Misaka said as she idly smoothed Kali’s hair, “we pick up next week, your body needing time to rest, and when we come back we shall make another attempt to unlock another element.” She continued to smooth Kali’s hair, her brown eyes looking into Kali’s eyes, allowing silence to descend between the two. “Return home and rest, okay?” She finally stated, and only when Kali nodded would Misaka grin down at her, standing up as she bide the child farewell.

With bones aching, and feeling the effects of an incoming headache, Kali pulled herself into a sitting position as her eyes looked around the training ground. She may have been exhausted, but she had managed to muster the strength to walk home, collapsing into her bed upon arrival. She was happy that Misaka was giving her one week to recover, she desperately needed it, and she would definitely be sleeping for the duration of her vacation. She wanted both her body, mind, and soul to be prepared for the grueling training section that awaited her in a week.

It had been a week since her elemental training had been put on hold, Misaka wanting to give Kali’s body time to recuperate from the grueling training session she had endured for a week only to put the child’s body through a grueling training regimen once again, though this time she was looking to unlock Doton instead of Futton. The unofficial member of the Terumi clan was looking forward to trying again, as she saw unlocking both of her advanced elements to be important and her duty as a true Terumi. She sort of hated being referred that way by the members of the Terumi clan, it had her thinking that they felt somehow inferior to those born with both Yoton and Futton, though they were as much a true Terumi as those with both advanced elements. But she could also understand their efforts in differentiating between those who had inherited one of the two advanced elements from those who inherited both advanced elements, so she didn’t argue with them. There really was no point, if she was considered a true Terumi, so be it, but the chances of her ever referring to herself as such aloud was lower than ten percent.

That didn’t matter at the moment though, at least it shouldn’t be on her mind at the moment, there being more pressing matters to attend to than something as trivial as a title the Terumi of Kirigakure has bestowed upon her and others like her. Her brown eyes would turn to the black-haired woman known as Misaka, an individual that had been serving as her personal guide to Terumi training since she had become an official Shinobi of Kirigakure, and to say that the woman was a soft teacher would be a lie. She was a soft-spoken, caring woman outside of training, but during a training session she seemed to turn into a sadist, or at least to Kali. She knew the woman wasn’t harsh just to be harsh, but she wished she would lighten up just a little bit. Her sensei, the Mizukage, was already working her to the bone every chance he got, and with Misaka doing the same, well Kali didn’t need to be a medic to know that her body would eventually collapse under the strain and stress she has been putting on it.

Misaka and her sensei had good intentions though, but Kali knew that eventually she would have to tell them what was best for her body, though that wouldn’t happen today. “Are you ready, Kali-chan?” came Misaka’s voice, snapping Kali out of her reveries as her eyes stared into that of Misaka’s. She thought for a flitting moment to say no, but it was a flitting thought and one she wouldn’t get away with if she were to say it aloud, she knew full well that Misaka had no problem making the training harder because her student was being cheeky and so Kali decided to nod. “Good.” Misaka uttered, smiling at Kali softly, “I shall explain to you what shall be occurring this week, so pay attention since I won’t repeat myself. Got it?”

Kali nodded, listening carefully as Misaka launched into their training regimen for the week.

She had been warned from day one that training would not be easy, though she had known that from the very beginning. Training with anybody else beside her father was a daunting task, all seemingly having the desire to train her to the brink of death. Kali sometimes wondered if her sensei ever realized that she wasn’t a twenty something Shinobi, but a fifteen-year-old girl, and thus what they deem easy wasn’t the same for her, having not gotten use to the regimen unlike them. She wondered if all sensei within Kirigakure were like the ones she had, and for a flitting moment she entertained the number of students that had possibly died from being worked to the bone. But she felt her concentration slipping, and with no desire to be scold by Misaka, she returned her attention at the task at hand.

Kali was at the moment concentrating on molding a round ball of earth into a shuriken, and had been doing so for nearly two hours with no luck. She felt like calling it quits, proclaiming the training as a waste of time and stating that she shall not continue any further. But Misaka had stated from the beginning that things were going to be difficult and that giving up because things didn’t happen as quickly as she wanted them to wouldn’t do. Kali wasn’t allowed to quit nor was she allowed to give up, she had to complete the week worth of training and she knew that Misaka would see it through to the end. The woman had stated on many occasions that failure wasn’t an option, and so it would never be presented to the fifteen-year-old.

So Kali went back to concentrating, eyes closed as she ignored the beads of sweat sliding down from her forehead. She could tell that her shirt was damp, her muscles stiff due to being in the same position for so long, and her chakra reserves just about ready to call it quits. But she would continue to attempt to mold the earthen ball into a shuriken, even if it took her all day and night.

It was day three of the training regimen, and Kali had been awoken by her sensei, the woman bursting into her room without warning. The fifteen-year-old counted herself lucky that she was already dressed and simply pulling her hair into a ponytail, for she would had been rather embarrassed if Misaka saw her naked. She knew that Misaka wouldn’t care much, and would had probably commented on the fact that what she had was much more impressive than the fifteen-year-old’s, but it mattered to Kali. Before she could chastise the woman, Misaka had dragged her off to the training grounds so that Kali may try once again to mold an earth ball into a shuriken.

Kali had managed to do it on the second day, but Misaka thought it a fluke, and thus decided that before her student could go on to the next task, she had to mold the earth ball into a shuriken in under fifteen minutes. A task that Kali knew would take a while for it had taken her two days to shape the damnable thing, but she would do the task anyways, though she didn’t have much say in the matter. So she was back to where she had started, eyes closed as she focused chakra into the earth ball, willing it to transform itself into a shuriken so that she may move onto something that didn’t test her patience.

Day five, Kali had finally moved onto something that didn’t involve her attempting to mold a ball of earth into a shuriken, something that Misaka had made her practice over the course of four days until the fifteen-year-old could do it upon command. It had tested the child’s patience, and on several occasions Kali felt like throwing a tantrum and even crying when the ball didn’t do as it was told right away, but she had finally been able to complete the task. Not only did she unlock her earthy element, but she had also learned patience and the will to not give up on a task no matter how stupid or difficult it seemed.

Having spent four days simply standing in one place, her sensei had decided that training would be more physical for the last two days, and had thus tasked Kali with something she thought had nothing to do with elemental training… dodging pressurized balls of water. Oh but that wasn’t the kicker, she had to also dodge fireballs. Yes, her sensei was a sadist person, but she had also helped Kali unlock Doton and would help her unlock Futton and Yoton in the future. Until than, well she would just have to dodge the various elemental attacks of doom.

It was pouring, the heavens above crying, sending their sorrowful tears down to the earth below. No one had died in Kirigakure, at least not to the knowledge of Kali, and if one had died, well their death didn’t warrant the unholy downpour that it set upon the residences of the village. Being cold and soaked to the bones, clothing sticking to her skin as if it were glue, wasn’t a fun feeling, and quite frankly she wished that the heavens would shut up and restore the mist that usually shrouded the country. She could at least handle having her vision impaired, though to be frank she could see quite well in even a thick blanket of mist, having lived within the country her entire life she had gotten use to the mist that plagued the country. Yet no mist shrouded the village on this particular day, driven away by the unrelenting rain.

She frowned to no one in particular as her brown eyes gazed up at the dark sky that loomed above all, a hint of irritation evident upon her sickly pale face as that frown turned into a scowl. Kali was annoyed, that much was obvious. Rain never did leave the Himitsu feeling warm and fuzzy inside, nor did it make her feel that way on the outside. No, rain only ended up souring her mood whilst also giving her that drowned rat look that was just so nice to see on anybody. With her displeasure obvious, one would question why she remained underneath the canopy of trees that provided minimum protection from the rain instead of simply going home, a question easily answered if one were to take into account the sixteen-year-old’s Terumi mentor. One look at Misaka, who also looked like a drowned rat with her raven black hair plastered to her face and face paler than usual, and it was clear that the woman wasn’t enjoying their poor luck either. Yet the woman had no intentions of turning her behind around and going back to the village, even though her home would provide a much better shelter from the rain than the canopy of trees, as well as something that the canopy couldn’t give the duo, warmth.

For some strange reason, or strange to Kali, the woman decided that their plans wouldn’t be changed no matter how miserable the two were, something about sticking to the schedule no matter the weather conditions. It sounded stupid to the Himitsu, for there were just some situations that one couldn’t push through, this being one of them. With them being wet, translating into them being cold, and the wind, which was chilly, upon their skin, well they were in danger of some serious health complications, hypothermia being amongst them. It was simply stupid of Misaka, and Kali knew that the woman knew that her decision to train through the rain was stupid. Yet with a strong desire to not end up severely beaten because she had dared speak against her sensei, the teenager opted to keep her mouth shut. She remained underneath the tree, back pressed firmly against the trunk with knees brought close to her chest, arms wrapped around her legs as she continued to stare at the sky.

She didn’t know what Misaka was waiting for, the two having done nothing for the past hour. Perhaps the black-haired woman was waiting for the rain to lighten up, but Kali highly doubted that would happen. This wasn’t simply water falling from the sky, no, Kirigakure was experiencing a storm, a rare occurrence within the lands, or at least rare on the island the village was built upon. Slowly Misaka would come to the same realization as Kali, without the need for the teen to outright tell her, but until than the Himitsu sat quietly. She shifted her position only once, and that was only to bury her face into her knees. She wasn’t a medic, but she was dangerously cold, and if her sensei didn’t call it quits now, well by god Kali would get up and go home, where she will change out of her wet clothes, take a hot shower, and warm up in front of the fireplace whilst sipping a cup of tea and probably playing shogi with her father.

“With the way it’s pouring, you think somebody had died,” Misaka jokingly said, a fail attempt at cheering up her student though she did receive a response. Having heard her sensei, Kali’s head had snapped up, brown eyes landing on the figure of Misaka, narrowing ever so slightly since she hadn’t found the joke funny. “If we don’t get out of the rain, we be the dead ones,” she mumbled underneath her breath, shifting her gaze to the right so that she was no longer glaring holes into her sensei’s body. “I guess you are right,” she heard the woman sigh, those brown eyes back on her sensei, surprise evident in her eyes. “We can do this some other time, preferably when it isn’t raining so vehemently. We try again tomorrow, for today you are dismissed.”

Kali stared at Misaka for a flitting second, wondering if the woman was simply pulling her leg, but seeing the sincerity in her eyes, the Himitsu got up. “Thank you, Misaka-sama,” she said, bowing for three seconds before quickly making her way home, just in case the raven haired woman decided to change her mind. In such a rush to leave, she had missed Misaka stating that she would be giving Kali a suitable punishment for her earlier comment. Though even if she had heard, there was a low chance that she would had cared, for soon she would be within her warm house, stripped of her wet clothes, showered and dressed in comfy pajamas whilst sitting before the fireplace, sipping on a cup of black tea whilst scarfing down several sandwiches. All of which was much better than standing out in the unforgiving rain that poured from the heavens.

“Whoa, I didn’t expect it to rain for five days straight!” Proclaimed Misaka Terumi as she walked down the now muddy path, Kali close behind her. “It smells disgusting,” Kali muttered, wrinkling her nose as the scent of wet animals, mildew, and the rain itself assaulted her nose. It wasn’t the first time that she had experienced rain, the frequency of which it falls was low, but she had experienced it at least twice in her life, now three. Yet usually it would only rain for a couple hours before stopping, clouds dissipating, allowing for a quick glimpse of the sky before the mist rolled back in. Despite her experiences, she had never had the misfortunes of enduring this pungent smell, and quite frankly she felt like gagging, it was that strong to her. Misaka, her raven haired sensei, didn’t seem bothered by the smell, though that reason could be the simple fact that she had the misfortunes of smelling worse stenches than what they were being subjected to now.

“We have lots of training to do today thanks to the inconvenience the rain had given us,” the woman said, completely ignoring Kali’s comment though the Himitsu hadn’t expected the woman to pay her any mind. The Terumi was focused on one thing, and one thing alone, and that was getting that advanced chakra nature unlocked before she handed the child over to her cousin, who would help the sixteen-year-old with the last advanced chakra nature. The woman did enjoy the company of the child that was ten years her junior, well whenever the child wasn’t complaining about something which was actually not very often, and the child knew that, but she had to be hard on her. With the child being a rare individual by the clan’s standards, Misaka didn’t believe she could afford coddling the child when said child had so much potential. A Terumi with both lava and boil release was something that occurred only twice in a given generation, and she be damned if she allowed this wielder of boil and lave to go to waste.

So she was tough on her, setting her expectation of the teenager incredibly high, and when the teen surpassed those expectations, well Misaka raised them even higher. It may annoy the teen from time to time, but Kali would always strive to surpass the expectations of her sensei with determination. And though she didn’t like some of the woman’s methods, she couldn’t say that they weren’t effective and some way. Under the guidance of Misaka, she had learned three out of the five elements she innately possessed, the duo not worried about another basic element in the teen’s arsenal on the simple basis that throughout history, those with boil and lava haven’t been able to unlock any other basic element besides the one that make up their two advanced chakra natures. It was something that Kali was grateful for, knowing that she wouldn’t had been able to do this alone.

After about a good thirty minute walk from the village, the two ladies would arrive in a somewhat forest clearing. Kali knew the area well, it being the place the two had been five days ago. The grass was damp, and the area was covered by a thin layer of mist, a welcome contrast to the storm that had hit the island. It was at that moment when Kali would discard her cloak, folding the fabric up and placing it near one of the various trees before turning her attention to Misaka. The woman was also cloaked, but she made no move to remove her cloak. Why should she? She wasn’t the one about to emit water vapour from her body. So the woman simply stared at the brown haired teen with her brown eyes, a smile on her face as her eyes assessed Kali’s appearance. “You know what to do.” Misaka said as she crossed her arms.

“Of course,” Kali said as she ran her fingers through her hair before dropping her hand to her side. With a sigh, she closed her eyes, streaming chakra throughout her body as she attempted to mix her fire and water chakra natures together in order to get boil release. Her teacher, Misaka, had told her that she would know when it was being done since she would be emitting water vapours from her body, the reason why she had to remove her cloak since it would had covered the water vapours up. She knew that it would be hard to accomplish, since it had taken her several days to learn her basic elements, so she wasn’t expecting to learn boil release on the first try nonetheless the first day period. Yet she really didn’t have much of an option since Misaka was the sort of person to keep her overnight and she didn’t want to be there for too long.

So she focused her attention on getting the perfect balance of water and fire chakra. And to be frank, that took much longer than she liked, five hours to be exact and she was rather tired. Standing in one place for a long period of time had caused her muscles to have stiffen ever so slightly, and her legs were tired on top of that, but she had managed to do it. She knew that she had done it simply because Misaka had clapped her hands together, causing Kali to lose focus and snap her eyes open. “What?” Kali said, eyes narrowing on Misaka. “Oh don’t do that Kali, it makes you look so angry,” Misaka said, waving her hand, “you emitted water vapours from your body, you should be happy.”

Kali paused for a moment, not sure what she should say, but a smile did cross her face. “I did?” she asked. “Of course, I just told you that you did. But… you know you are going to have to continue with this exercise until you can do it without a second thought,” Misaka chirped, grinning as Kali groaned.“Begin!” She exclaimed, chuckling softly, and Kali did as she was told, spending the rest of the day, and most of the night, practicing the boil release.
